Music Tree - David Greschler

I was born in the forest

The birds knew my name

Insects crawled my branches

And the earth fed me rain

The days would rise, the nights would fall

As the rings of time drew within me

The earth would turn as I grew tall

A dream from a single seed

Time was endless in the forest

Until the mighty storm

and in a single moment I went

crashing to the forest floor

The days went dark

The birds forgot my name

The nights, were cold and long

Until she came

Until she came

She took me to her workshop

Where wood turns into sound

She married me with steel and strings

And there my voice was found

We would sing all day

And deep into the night

As we traveled around the world

Playing songs under bright lights

The days turned into decades

Crowds would come each night

Everyone would sing our songs

As they laughed and cried

Generations side-by-side

Each day we’d write another song

Each note would rise to the rooftops

But then one day I awoke alone

And the music stopped

I lay inside her workshop

The air was filled with tears

My strings grew cold and out of tune

The songs had disappeared

And then one day a man came by

With brand new melodies

He took me back to the outside

And brought new notes to me

New songs for this old tree

So this is my story

Of a life lived long

More than branches grow from me

And so will the songs

And so will the songs

Do you hear the forest?

And so will the songs

Feel the coolness of the rain

And so will the songs

Hear the birds out call my name

And this is my song

I was born in the forest
